VPS CPU Showdown 2026: Ryzen vs EPYC vs Xeon vs ARM — What Actually Matters When You Buy
Ryzen 9950X at $3/month, EPYC in every budget panel, Intel i9 on consumer boards, ARM at half the price. Here is how to pick.
The CPU line on your VPS order page matters more than the RAM number
Every VPS order form asks the same questions. Location, RAM, disk, bandwidth. CPU shows up as a footnote, if it shows up at all. That is backwards. Two servers with identical specs can differ 3x in database throughput purely because one runs on a Ryzen 9950X node and the other sits on a 2017-era Xeon that has been resold four times.
The good news: 2026 is a buyers market for CPU performance. LowEndTalk this August reads like a spec sheet arms race. CentrixNodes pushes Ryzen 7950X plans in Buffalo from $2.55 a month on a 10Gbps port. Fourplex runs Ryzen 9000 servers in NYC at $3 for 2GB, unmetered. VM6, a UK company registered in 2025 (Company No. 16553775), sells both Ryzen 9950X and Xeon Gold 6230 from £1.75. SoftShellWeb deploys 9950X in Los Angeles and Xeon Gold in Utah. You no longer need to pay hyperscaler prices to get current-generation silicon.
The catch: marketing pages say "Ryzen" or "EPYC" and stop there. Which Ryzen? Shared or dedicated vCPU? Boost clocks or base? This guide walks through the four CPU families you will actually meet on an order page, with verified prices, and tells you where each one wins.
The four families, in plain terms
AMD Ryzen (3000/5000/7000/9000 series): the clock speed king
Ryzen is AMD's consumer and prosumer line. Server operators love it because single-core performance beats almost everything else per dollar. A Ryzen 9 9950X boosts around 5.7GHz. For PHP, Node.js, Minecraft, game servers, small databases, and anything that runs mostly on one thread at a time, high clocks are the entire ballgame.
Why is consumer silicon in datacenters at all? Because VPS nodes idle most of the time, and a 16-core Ryzen box comfortably hosts 40-60 small KVM guests. The vendor gets great per-core economics; you get single-thread speed that a low-clocked Xeon cannot match at any price. This is why the budget end of the market has standardized on Ryzen. DediRock built an entire product line on the opposite bet, though: their i9 Dream series runs Intel Core i9 instead, which we will get to.
AMD EPYC (7002/7003/8004/9004 series): cores in bulk
EPYC is the server counterpart. Fewer gigahertz, dramatically more cores, eight-channel memory controllers, and huge L3 caches on the X-series parts. A single EPYC 9354 gives you 32 cores and 64 threads with 256MB of L3. If your workload is parallel, think video encoding, CI runners, JVM services, Rust builds, running a dozen containers, EPYC wins on density. Per-core it is slower than Ryzen. Per-socket it is not close.
You will see "EPYC" on a lot of budget listings lately, usually Milan (7003). That is genuinely good silicon, one generation old, and it is why $10/year VPS offers can still deliver respectable performance. Watch the vCPU count more than the name: a 2 vCPU slice of a 64-core Milan node can be squeezed by noisy neighbors in ways a 2 vCPU slice of a lightly loaded Ryzen node is not.
Intel Xeon (Scalable Gold/Platinum, and the older E lines): the incumbent
Xeon is what the used-server pipeline spits out by the ton. Decommissioned cloud clusters dump Xeon Gold 6138/6230 class machines onto the secondary market, and budget hosts snap them up. The result: cheap capacity, AVX-512 on many parts, excellent virtualization support, and per-core speed that lags modern Ryzen by a wide margin. The 6230 in VM6's UK nodes boosts to around 3.5GHz, roughly 60% of a 9950X's ceiling.
That is not a knock. For a control panel, a mail server, a VPN endpoint, or a low-traffic site, a Xeon slice at £1.75 is exactly the right amount of computer. Just do not build a game server on one and wonder why tick rates suffer.
ARM (Ampere Altra, Graviton-class): the quiet price disruptor
ARM servers give you more cores per dollar and better performance-per-watt, with a catch your application has to care about: everything must run on aarch64. In 2026 that catch is smaller than ever. Docker images for ARM are routine, Ubuntu/Debian/Alpine are first-class, and languages like Go, Java, Python, and Node ship multi-arch builds by default. The Ampere Altra cores in Hetzner's CAX line are modest per-core, but you get more of them for the money, and the line tops out at 16 vCPU in a cloud instance.
Verified prices, side by side
Prices below were pulled from live APIs and order pages in September 2026. Two warnings before the numbers. First, Hetzner's shared x86 line had stock warnings on several plans when we checked, so we list only their ARM line, which their public price API confirms. Second, budget-market prices move weekly; treat these as calibration, not gospel.
- Vultr Cloud Compute (vc2): $5/mo for 1 vCPU, 1GB RAM, 25GB disk. Their baseline shared vCPU pool.
- Vultr High Frequency (vhf): $6/mo for 1 vCPU, 1GB, 32GB. $24/mo for 2 vCPU, 4GB, 128GB. Same money as regular cloud, faster cores and storage. For most people this is the correct default.
- Vultr High Performance (vhp): $6/mo for 1 vCPU, 1GB, 25GB, with an explicit AMD or Intel choice at the same price. Useful when you want to A/B test architectures on one bill.
- Hetzner CAX (Ampere ARM): CAX11 at €6.49/mo for 2 vCPU, 4GB, 40GB NVMe. CAX21 at €10.99 for 4 vCPU, 8GB. CAX31 at €16.49 for 8 vCPU, 16GB. CAX41 at €29.99 for 16 vCPU, 32GB. That top plan is 16 ARM cores for less than three Vultr High Frequency 2-core instances.
- DediRock i9 Dream (Intel Core i9, NY): $34.99/yr for 2GB DDR5, 1 vCore, 30GB NVMe, 2TB traffic. $44.99/yr for 3GB, $54.99/yr for 4GB and 2 vCores. Roughly $2.90/mo effective for the entry plan.

Read that list again and a pattern appears. The cheapest strong-single-core x86 deals are all Ryzen. The cheapest many-core deals are ARM. Xeon dominates the middle. That is the whole market in three sentences.
Single-core vs multi-core: match the CPU to the job
Pick high clocks (Ryzen, i9) when one fast thread is the bottleneck
Web apps spend most of their life inside one request handler at a time. WordPress PHP execution, a Node event loop, a MySQL join on a small dataset, a game server tick: all effectively single-threaded for meaningful stretches. There, 5.7GHz beats 32 slow cores every day. This is also why providers advertise "great single-core benchmarks" specifically for their Ryzen tiers.
Pick core count (EPYC, ARM) when the work spreads out
Encoding a video, compiling Chromium, running Kubernetes with a dozen services, crunching logs, training a small model: these eat all the threads you can give them. An 8 vCPU ARM instance at €16.49 will finish parallel builds faster than a 2 vCPU Ryzen slice costing similar money from a premium vendor. The break-even is workload-specific, but the rule of thumb holds.
- Latency jobs scale with clocks: web requests, game ticks, single big queries.
- Throughput jobs scale with cores: builds, encodes, batch processing, container fleets.
- Steal time is the tiebreaker: if two plans look equal, the one with less CPU steal under load wins, and dedicated vCPU is how you buy certainty.
Dedicated vs shared vCPU is worth real money
Hetzner's own cloud page splits plans into shared and dedicated vCPU categories and says so plainly: shared plans are built for variable workloads, not sustained load. A dedicated 2 vCPU will outperform a shared 4 vCPU under sustained CPU load, because the dedicated one cannot be throttled by a noisy neighbor mining on the same node. If your service runs hot 24/7, budget for dedicated cores before you budget for more RAM.
The consumer-silicon bet: DediRock's i9 Dream, examined
DediRock made its name on sub-$9/year Ryzen VPS deals. In July 2026 they launched the i9 Dream line: Intel Core i9 nodes in New York with DDR5 RAM, pitched at database work, rendering, and virtualization. The specs we verified from their billing system: $34.99/yr gets you 2GB DDR5, one vCore, 30GB NVMe, 2TB traffic on a 1Gbps port. That is aggressive pricing for DDR5-era hardware.
The interesting part is what it signals. A provider big enough to run promo lines in Los Angeles, Buffalo, and now i9 nodes in NY is making the same argument this guide makes: for the workloads most buyers actually run, a handful of very fast consumer cores beats a large slice of tired server silicon. The company behind it, Atlas Cloud LLC in Clearwater, Florida, is an established LET advertiser, which matters in a market where operators vanish overnight.
One caveat that applies to all annual budget deals: a year is a long commitment. Pay annually when the provider has years of track record, pay monthly when they do not.
What to actually check before ordering
- Exact CPU model. "Ryzen" spans 2017's 1000-series to 2024's 9950X. If a listing will not name the model, ask, or check their looking-glass page. A Ryzen 5 3600 node and a Ryzen 9 9950X node are different products with the same logo.
- Dedicated or shared vCPU. Sustained workloads need dedicated. Bursty personal projects are fine shared.
- RAM generation. DDR5 nodes (like i9 Dream) have measurably better memory bandwidth. It shows up in database-heavy work.
- Boost behavior under virtualization. Some hosts pin vCPU frequency for fairness. Good for consistency, costs you peak single-core numbers.
- Test before committing. Run a 60-second sysbench or Geekbench pass in the first hours. Every provider above offers refunds or cancellation windows; use them.
The short version
Game server, busy WordPress, API latency-sensitive: Ryzen 9950X or i9 tiers, ideally dedicated vCPU. Builds, encodes, container fleets: EPYC or an 8-16 core ARM box like CAX31/41, which at €16.49-€29.99 is the cheapest legit many-core compute in 2026. Control panels, DNS, VPN, and everything else that just needs to stay up: any Xeon or baseline plan, and spend the savings on backups. And if your stack runs on Docker or a mainstream language, try one ARM instance at Hetzner money before renewing your x86 fleet. Plenty of teams switch permanently and cut the bill in half doing it.
