Hetzner Cloud Review 2026: Pricing, Performance Benchmarks, Feature Deep Dive & Real Trade-offs
The definitive Hetzner Cloud review for 2026. Full pricing analysis (post-April 2026 increases), real performance benchmarks vs DigitalOcean and Vultr, feature comparison, managed services gap analysis, current promo codes and EUR 20 free credit guide.
Why Hetzner Cloud matters in 2026
Hetzner has quietly become the most discussed cloud provider in developer circles. Not because of flashy marketing — Hetzner doesn't do flashy — but because its pricing forces a conversation that most cloud providers would rather avoid: what are you actually paying for?
A CPX22 instance (2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM, 80 GB NVMe, 20 TB traffic) costs EUR 19.49/month. The equivalent from DigitalOcean? $24/month. From Vultr? $20/month. At EUR 19.49 versus roughly $20-$24/month for comparable US plans, the gap is now modest; compare the live configuration, included traffic, and location before deciding.
This review covers everything: the June 2026 pricing changes, real-world performance benchmarks, the feature gaps you need to know about, and exactly who should — and shouldn't — use Hetzner.
Company background
Founded in 1997 in Gunzenhausen, Germany, Hetzner is one of Europe's largest hosting providers with roughly 400 employees. Unlike many cloud companies backed by venture capital, Hetzner is privately held and profitable. This matters: there's no investor pressure to grow at all costs, which means pricing decisions are based on operational efficiency rather than market-share tactics.
The company operates data centers in Falkenstein (Germany), Nuremberg (Germany), Helsinki (Finland), and Ashburn (Virginia, USA). A Singapore location was announced but has not yet launched as of mid-2026.
2026 pricing: what changed in June
Hetzner's official price adjustment took effect on 15 June 2026. It materially increased affected CPX and CCX plans; the live console remains the source of truth for availability and location-specific pricing. Current EU pricing is summarised below:
- CPX11 (1 vCPU, 2 GB RAM, 40 GB NVMe, 20 TB): not listed in Hetzner’s June 2026 EU price-adjustment table; check the live console before ordering
- CPX21 (2 vCPU, 2 GB RAM, 40 GB NVMe, 20 TB): not listed in Hetzner’s June 2026 EU price-adjustment table; check the live console before ordering
- CPX22 (2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM, 80 GB NVMe, 20 TB): EUR 19.49/month (was EUR 7.99)
- CPX31 (2 vCPU, 8 GB RAM, 160 GB NVMe, 20 TB): not listed in Hetzner’s June 2026 EU price-adjustment table; check the live console before ordering
- CPX32 (4 vCPU, 8 GB RAM, 160 GB NVMe, 20 TB): EUR 35.49/month
- CPX41 (4 vCPU, 16 GB RAM, 320 GB NVMe, 20 TB): not listed in Hetzner’s June 2026 EU price-adjustment table; check the live console before ordering
- CPX42 (8 vCPU, 16 GB RAM, 320 GB NVMe, 20 TB): EUR 69.49/month
Important context: despite its still-low entry prices, Hetzner’s affected CPX and CCX prices increased materially than US-based competitors. The CPX22 at EUR 19.49 is no longer roughly one-third the cost of a comparable DigitalOcean Droplet at $24/month. The price increase mostly closed the gap with Hetzner's own historical pricing rather than with competitors.
Note on US regions: Hetzner's Ashburn data center plans include only 1 TB of transfer (vs 20 TB in Europe), which substantially changes the value equation for US-primary workloads.
Performance benchmarks
Independent benchmarks from VPSBenchmarks and BetterStack consistently show Hetzner's AMD EPYC-based instances performing at or near the top of their price class.
CPU performance
Hetzner's CPX series uses AMD EPYC processors (typically EPYC 7713 or EPYC 9124, depending on the generation). In Geekbench 6 multi-core tests, a CPX22 scores approximately 8,500-9,000 points. A comparable DigitalOcean Basic Droplet (2 vCPU, Intel Xeon) scores approximately 5,500-6,000 points. The gap is roughly 50% in Hetzner's favor.
Vultr's High-Frequency instances use high-clock CPUs and score close to Hetzner on single-core benchmarks (around 1,800-2,000 points in Geekbench 6 single-core), but Hetzner pulls ahead on multi-core workloads due to the EPYC architecture.
Storage performance
All Hetzner Cloud plans use NVMe SSD storage. Sequential read speeds typically reach 1,500-2,500 MB/s, with write speeds of 800-1,200 MB/s. Random IOPS are strong: approximately 40,000-60,000 IOPS for reads and 20,000-35,000 IOPS for writes. These numbers are competitive with DigitalOcean Premium Droplets and Vultr High-Frequency instances.
Network performance
European network performance is excellent. Internal transfer speeds between Hetzner data centers reach 5-10 Gbits/sec. Public transfer speeds to major European peering points (AMS-IX, DE-CIX) are consistently above 5 Gbits/sec. IPv6 performance matches IPv4 — Hetzner treats IPv6 as a first-class citizen.
The tradeoff is intercontinental latency. From Helsinki to the US West Coast, expect 150-170ms. From Falkenstein to Singapore, 180-200ms. This is physics, not Hetzner's fault, but it matters for global applications.
Feature deep dive
Cloud Console
Hetzner's web-based control panel is fast, minimal, and intentionally uncluttered. Server provisioning takes roughly 25 seconds — faster than DigitalOcean (45s average) and Vultr (30-40s). The dashboard shows CPU, disk, network, and traffic graphs out of the box. No configuration required.
Firewalls
Stateful firewalls are applied at the infrastructure level, not as iptables wrappers inside your VM. Define inbound and outbound rules, assign a named firewall set to one or more servers, and changes propagate immediately. Reusable across a fleet without per-server rule management. This feature is free and available on all plans.
Placement groups
Configure servers to always land on different physical hosts, reducing the blast radius of a hardware failure. Available at no extra cost. Neither DigitalOcean nor Vultr offers this as a first-class provisioning option.
Snapshots and backups
On-demand snapshots: EUR 0.014/GB/month. Automated backups: 20% of instance cost, retaining up to 7 daily backups. For a CPX22, that's roughly EUR 3.90/month for automatic recovery coverage.
Private networks
Layer 3 virtual networks connecting servers within a project. Useful for isolating backend services without firewall rule complexity. Free and straightforward to configure.
API and Terraform
Hetzner's REST API is well-documented and actively maintained. The official Terraform provider supports all major resources (servers, firewalls, volumes, SSH keys, placement groups, load balancers). Cloud-init user data is supported at provisioning time for automated first-boot configuration.
Load balancers
Managed load balancers start at EUR 7.49/month. Support HTTP, HTTPS, and TCP protocols. Health checks, SSL termination, and sticky sessions included.
Object storage
S3-compatible object storage starts at EUR 6.49/month (base) plus EUR 0.005/GB/month for storage and EUR 0.001/GB for egress. EU regions only. No CDN integration — you'll need Cloudflare or Bunny.net for global caching.
What Hetzner doesn't have (the real trade-offs)
This section matters more than the features section. Here's what you give up:
- No managed databases. No managed PostgreSQL, MySQL, Redis, or MongoDB. You run your own database software on a VM. This is cheaper but requires operational expertise for backups, failover, and version upgrades.
- No PaaS / App Platform. No equivalent to DigitalOcean's App Platform. Push-to-deploy workflows require your own CI/CD pipeline setup.
- No Kubernetes control plane. You can run Kubernetes yourself on Hetzner VMs (kubeadm, Rancher, or Talos), but there's no managed Kubernetes service.
- No GPU instances. Hetzner doesn't offer GPU instances for AI/ML workloads.
- Limited geographic coverage. 4 data centers in 3 countries. No Asia-Pacific presence. No South America. This is the biggest limitation for global applications.
- Minimal support. Ticket-based support. Generally competent but not fast. No phone support, no live chat, no dedicated account manager unless you're on a large contract.
Competitor comparison
- vs DigitalOcean: Hetzner wins on price and raw performance. DigitalOcean wins on managed services, geographic coverage, documentation, and support. Choose Hetzner if you know Linux. Choose DigitalOcean if you value developer experience.
- vs Vultr: Hetzner wins on price and European performance. Vultr wins on geographic coverage (32+ locations vs 4) and offers GPU instances. Vultr's hourly billing is more flexible for ephemeral workloads.
- vs Linode (Akamai): Similar positioning to DigitalOcean. Hetzner is cheaper. Linode's Akamai backbone provides excellent global delivery for CDN-like use cases.
- vs OVHcloud: OVHcloud offers more global coverage and free DDoS protection but generally underperforms Hetzner in CPU and storage benchmarks at similar price points.

Current promotions and discounts
Hetzner's main ongoing promotion for new users is EUR 20 in free cloud credits, available through referral links. This is enough to run a CPX22 instance for approximately one month at no cost. The promo code LTT24 offers 20% off server signups for new customers (limited availability).
Unlike many providers, Hetzner does not offer first-year promotional pricing with renewal spikes — because their regular pricing is already competitive. There are no Black Friday or Cyber Monday sales on cloud products.
Who should use Hetzner
Yes, if: You're comfortable managing your own infrastructure. Your users are primarily in Europe. You want maximum resources per dollar. You need GDPR-compliant hosting. You're running bandwidth-heavy applications.
No, if: You need managed databases or a PaaS. Your users are in Asia-Pacific. You want 24/7 phone support. You need GPU compute. You prefer a fully managed platform over raw VMs.
