IONOS VPS+ Review 2026: What the $2 Intro Price Actually Buys You
Full VPS+ price table verified at the source, renewal math, benchmark grades, and who should skip it.
IONOS in 60 seconds
IONOS is the hosting arm of United Internet, a German internet conglomerate. The company started in 1988 as 1&1, kept that name through the entire shared-hosting era, rebranded to IONOS in 2021 and went public in 2023. Headquarters in Karlsruhe, more than 8 million customer contracts, and its own data centers in Germany, the UK, Spain and the US. If you hosted a website in the 2000s, you probably already had an account with them under the old name.
The VPS product got a full refresh. The current line is called VPS+, it replaced the old XS-to-XXL tiers in the US store, and every plan runs NVMe storage with unlimited traffic. That last part is the hook. Most budget hosts meter your transfer or throttle the port. IONOS does neither, on any tier.
The full VPS+ price table, checked at the source
We pulled the lineup from the official IONOS VPS page on October 31, 2026. One thing to know first: the numbers in the ads are intro rates, valid for the first 3 months of a 1-year term. The regular price starts in month 4.
- VPS S+: $2/mo intro, then $6/mo. 1 vCore, 2 GB RAM, 60 GB NVMe.
- VPS M+: $5/mo intro, then $14/mo. 2 vCores, 4 GB RAM, 120 GB NVMe.
- VPS L+: $8/mo intro, then $25/mo. 4 vCores, 8 GB RAM, 240 GB NVMe.
- VPS XL+: $14/mo intro, then $47/mo. 8 vCores, 16 GB RAM, 480 GB NVMe.
- VPS XXL+: $20/mo intro, then $68/mo. 12 vCores, 24 GB RAM, 720 GB NVMe.
Every plan includes unlimited traffic with port speed up to 1 Gbit/s, one IPv4 address plus IPv6, full root access, full-server images for rollback, a configurable firewall, and a choice of US, UK, German or Spanish data center. Listed availability is 99.99%. Plesk Obsidian appears in the configurator as a 6-dollar-per-month add-on, not a bundled freebie on this line.
The renewal math nobody puts in the ad
Here is where the deal gets less shiny. Run the numbers on the first year and the effective cost separates from the headline fast:
- S+: 3 months at $2 plus 9 months at $6 equals $60 for year one. Effective $5.00 per month, not $2.
- M+: $141 for the first year, effective $11.75 per month.
- L+: $249 for the first year, effective $20.75 per month.
- XXL+: $672 for the first year, effective $56 per month.
Across the lineup, the year-one effective price lands at 2.5x to 3x the advertised number. Budget for the renewal rate, not the intro rate, or the month-4 invoice will surprise you.
Existing customers have their own version of this story. IONOS published a 2026 price-adjustment notice for VPS contracts, sent by email with a PDF listing every affected contract and its new price. If you sit on a grandfathered XS-to-XXL plan, open that mail before assuming your rate is locked. The stated justification is the same one every host uses right now: energy and hardware costs.
Performance: the disk is the weak link
The independent benchmark service VPSBenchmarks ran trials on the new line during 2026. The VPS L+ (September 2026 trial) scored B for web performance and B for raw CPU, C for performance stability, C for network, and D for disk IO. The XXL+ (August 2026 trial) did better on compute, an A for raw CPU and B for web and network, but disk IO still landed on D and stability on D as well.
Read that twice before ordering. The CPU side of these machines is genuinely good, and the RAM allotments are generous for the money. The storage layer is where IONOS saves its euros. A database under sustained random writes, a busy Elasticsearch node, heavy CI with lots of scratch IO, you will feel that D grade. A static site, a reverse proxy, a small mail server, a VPN endpoint or a bot host will likely never notice.
Reviews of the pre-2026 line told the same story: strong single-core and memory results, forgettable IO. The refresh moved everything to NVMe, but the shared-storage ceiling apparently came along for the ride.
What you get that budget rivals do not hand you
- Unlimited traffic on every plan. Contabo meters above the included allowance, Hetzner meters beyond its per-plan allowance with per-TB overage fees, and half the LowEndBox tier sells plans with tight monthly caps. IONOS just moves the bytes.
- Four regions on one account: US, UK, Germany, Spain. Hetzner has no UK or Spanish location. For a shop that needs an EU footprint plus a US box under a single GDPR-native bill, the list of candidates is short.
- A listed company with 8 million contracts behind the product. ISO-certified German data centers, a real support organization, 24/7 phone and chat. In a market full of two-person hosting companies that vanish overnight, boring and huge has value.
- Full-server images and a panel firewall out of the box. Roll back a bad update without hand-rolling snapshot scripts on the command line.
IONOS vs Contabo vs Hetzner
On specs per dollar, IONOS loses to both rivals, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest. Contabo's entry VPS, which we reviewed earlier this year, hands you 8 GB of RAM for around 4.50 euros a month. Hetzner's cloud line undercuts IONOS on nearly every size class inside the EU. If RAM-per-euro is the whole decision, stop reading and go buy one of those.
The comparison just is not symmetric. Contabo bills for traffic beyond the included amount and its network reputation is mixed. Hetzner meters transfer with overage fees and offers no UK or Spain. IONOS charges more per gigabyte of RAM but removes the traffic variable entirely and adds two European locations its German rival cannot sell you. Different products for different failure modes.
One structural gap: VPS+ is a contract product, monthly or annual, not an hourly-billed cloud. There is no spin-up-spin-down workflow here. For ephemeral or autoscaling workloads, use a real cloud, DigitalOcean, Vultr or Hetzner Cloud. IONOS VPS+ is a leased server, and should be judged as one.
Who should skip it
- Anyone who needs hourly billing, an API-driven fleet or autoscaling groups. Not this product.
- Write-heavy and database-heavy workloads. That D in disk IO is a hard constraint, not a nitpick.
- Shoppers comparing purely on RAM per dollar. Contabo and netcup win that fight and always have.
Verdict
IONOS VPS+ is a solid leased VPS from an enormous, accountable, slightly boring company. The intro pricing is a marketing instrument, so do the renewal math before checkout: the S+ is a 5-dollar-a-month server wearing a 2-dollar hat. Accept that, skip it for IO-bound work, and it becomes an easy recommendation for low-traffic web projects, mail, proxies and anything that wants an EU or US home with unmetered transfer.
